Are You Using These Toxic Cleaners In Your Home?

By: Selvin Flores

There are many cleaning and personal care products which contain harmful chemicals. These products are being used on a daily basis in every typical home. Studies have shown that the majority of these homes contain over 63 toxic products that together contain hundreds of chemicals. If they are not used with the greatest of caution, these chemicals have the potential to cause serious harm or even kill your children.

This is what happened to little Elizabeth Davis of Houston, Texas. When she was only one year old she crawled over to the dishwasher while her mother was unloading the dishes. She put her small fingers in the detergent dispensing cup and ate a finger full of wet undissolved commercial dish detergent. In minutes her face was red and blistered. Her tongue and the inside of her mouth were burned white. Luckily, she was rushed to a nearby hospital emergency room for quick medical attention. She recovered in a few days.

There is another documented case involving a 20 month old boy who suffered through many operations and had to be fed through tubes for five months. Once again, this tragedy was caused by dishwasher detergent. These are only 2 of the thousands of documented cases of children being exposed to and ingesting what most people consider common household products. In both cases the presence of these "common household products" in the home had terrible life-threatening consequences.

It is estimated that the US Poison Control Center has nearly 1.5 million reported cases of accidental ingestion of poisons every year. Sad to say, most of these cases were under 12 years of age.

Ingestion is only one of the three major ways that these toxic chemicals enter the body. These chemicals are even far more dangerous when they are inhaled because they go directly into the blood stream and can quickly affect the lungs, heart, brain, liver, and kidneys.

Have you ever wondered what the strong odor in the cleaners isle of your supermarket is?. That strong smell is caused by what industry experts describe as "out gassing". Out gassing is the vapors escaping from the "sealed" containers on the supermarket shelves. These vapors are extremely harmful to your health. Have you ever been literally driven out of your bathroom shower while using one of the most popular tile cleaners?. These types of cleaners must contain strong chemicals in order to do the job. They may get the job done but they put you at risk because of the strong vapors that are generated. By the time you have exited the bathroom, the toxic chemical vapors have entered your blood stream and are wrecking havoc with your health.

Do you know that one square centimeter of skin, which is about the size of a dime, contains 3 million cells and 4 yards of nerves? How do you think nicotine and hormone replacement patches work? The chemicals from the patch enter the body through the skin to do their work. This same absorption occurs every time a cleaning product touches your skin. If your baby happens to crawl across your nicely scrubbed kitchen floor, even after several days, the skin will pick up and absorb whatever toxic chemicals happen to be in the cleaner.

You can remove these toxic products from your home and start protecting your family. Start using non-toxic cleaners and other products in your home today.

What You Should Know Before Buying a Hot Tub

By: Chloe Robertson

Ah, the joys of having a hot tub! Imagine soaking in the warm water of the hot tub after a long, busy day at work. Hot tubs, especially those with different massage settings, are perfect in loosening sore and tight muscles reaped from a tiring day. Hot tubs are also a favorite of jet setters. A dip in the hot tub is a surefire way to alleviate jet lag. People get hot tubs because of the minimal space they require, as compared with getting a swimming pool, ease of maintenance and the healing and relaxing benefits.

If you wish to buy a hot tub, which people also refer to as spa, there are things you have to learn so you are assured that you make the right decisions:

1. Location
As with the real estate business, location is the key. Hot tubs may be placed indoors or outdoors. People love the natural feeling of lounging in hot tubs outdoors, under the sky and amongst the greens. If you wish to install your hot tub outdoors, make sure that it is away from trees and from the eyes of your neighbors. You may not mind the stares, but they might mind the sight.

2. Foundation
Make sure that you have a solid and sturdy foundation for your hot tub, whether putting it indoors or outdoors. Foundation sites for hot tubs must be able to hold at least 100 pounds per square foot.

3. Costing
Determine how many people will use the hot tub – solo, with a partner or with friends and family. Cost of hot tubs is dependent on the make and the size. Modern hot tubs now have special features, such as an entertainment dock for your DVD and mp3 player. Different lighting effects and massage effects also add to the price of hot tubs. Your expenses start the moment you get a hot tub and go on for as long as you operate it. Costs cover water, electricity and maintenance. Ask your hot tub dealer for an estimated operations cost, so that you know if it fits your lifestyle budget. Also ask about cost-efficient measures, such as full insulation.

4. Safety
Hot tubs are considered a luxury item that it is no surprise that a hot tub may be stolen from time to time. Locking cover and alarm systems are available to protect your hot tub from robbers. Locking covers also keep your children away for their safety. Acquaint yourselves with each knob and switch in your hot tub – safety switch, temperature control and automatic shut-off.

5. Installation
Leave the installation of hot tubs to the experts. Hot tubs require electricity and a plumbing system. If you’re going to have the hot tub installed outdoors, a haul in your plumbing might be in order. Check with experts first if you have a feasible location for your hot tub before you make your purchase. The last thing you’d want is to excite yourself over a hot tub that turns out impossible to install.

The Benefits of Buying a Cordless Power Tool

By: Dan Lazaj

Over the past years, power tool manufactures have introduced cordless power tools with huge success. Folks love the convenience of using them without having to worry if there will be a power outlet available. Another great bonus is not worrying about cords being in the way, and especially when your extension cords will not reach the work area.

Like most of us have come to realize, these benefits will have a higher price tag. When you go and purchase a cordless tool, you will notice that they will always cost more than one with a cord. One big disadvantage will be that it will not deliver the constant power as a corded one. For allot of users this will not be a major issue, but if the job you are performing will be big, this might be a problem.

Having a cord on the power tool is always guaranteed to work when you need it. With a cordless tool this will not be the case. Speaking from my own experience, I have often picked up a cordless power tool and have come to realize the battery was drained from just being stored. In most cases all you need to do is charge it up, but many times the battery will become weaker and weaker over the years. So getting it to hold a full charge will not be possible. If this should ever occur you should consider buying a new battery.

With a cordless power tool you will not have to worry about tripping over cords. You will as well eliminate being shocked accidentally. A bad thing will be that somebody can't unplug the tool in case of an emergency. Make certain the power switch is easy to see and get to when you are selecting power tools.

Most manufactures will include two batteries with their power tools, so you can always have a fully charged battery ready when you need it. You can use one till the battery drains, and simply trade it with the one in the charger. This will be a fast and simple so you will not loose any time when performing your tasks.

When it comes to purchasing cordless power tools, different people will always have their own opinions. Most will like the portability you get, and a paying little more does not matter. Lots of folks will only be using these tools for weekend projects, so having that extra power really won't be necessary. If however your job requires the use of power tools having the extra power from a corded tool might be necessary. That is no problem since manufactures carry both options. This will allow you to pick the best tool for your needs.

To choose, decide on the things the power tool will be used for. What kind of projects will this tool be used for? Are there power outlets in the area you will be working? What is the power that is required for your projects? If these choices don't matter to you, you can just buy the best tool with the lowest price tag.

By: Dan Mercurio

Atwood has focused on developing each component for the maximum efficiency based on the capacity of each unit. Because of this each heat exchanger is specifically designed for the water heater's capacity resulting in the least amount ot time to heat up. Atwood Water heater heat exchangers use double tube construction that helps to prevent the possibility of containments entering the fresh water system.

The outer construction developed for every Atwood water heater is designed from corrosion resistant materials and is designed to stand even the harshest of environments that customers may choose to take their recreational vehicles into. Atwood has placed special attention to even the smallest of details including the edges and corners to assure the greatest safety. Even things such as the cubic shape and lightweight aluminum-alloy tank were considered when determining the greater flexibility when using water heaters with the vast number of RV floor plans.

Atwood Water Heaters are a favorite among RVers because with most models they can heat up in less than 30 minutes creating a generous amount of water to make everyone’s trip on the road an enjoyable one. When designing their units, Atwood takes all mobile hot water needs into consideration and as a result has produced a full line of products to suit every RV model and customer tastes.

If you are looking to replace an old or worn out water heater or are simply wanting something more efficient, you first need to start by consider what your hot water needs are. Think about the size of the tank that will you currently have and whether the new Atwood model you have chosen will fit in your recreational vehicle without hindering movement. Even though every Atwood water heater tank is designed to be space saving, like any other water heater, if filled to capacity new units can easily add between 70 and 200 pounds to your trailer or motor home.

Although size is an important factor, the next most important item to consider is the fuel type based on the current capabilities of your RV or trailer. As previously stated, Atwood Water Heaters are made to run on 120-volt electricity, liquid propane or a combination of the two. One feature when considering a gas unit is its standing pilot light which helps to maintain a constant temperature for added fuel efficiency. If you are considering a model that uses liquid propane or the combination gas/electric you must remember that they require a minimum input of 8,800 or 10,000 BTU depending size. As an example, with a gas-fired unit that has a 10-gallon water heater with 10,000 BTU inputs will produce a maximum of 8.4 gallons of hot water per hour. The units that are a combo of gas and electric feature the simultaneous use of the gas burner as well as the electric heating element. When they are used together it is possible for an 8,800 BTU unit with a 1,500-Watt element to generate as much as 13.5 gallons per hour. With the new Atwood 10-gallon exothermal gas/electric combo water heater, customers have seen as much as 50% more hot water than the standard electric unit.

Every Atwood water heater is designed to be lightweight, easy to install or replace and serviceable by any reputable RV dealer. The addition of fiberglass insulation around the interior of the storage tank helps to keep hot water ho continuously. The fact that they have reviewed so many manufacturer designs when designing their units insures the maximum possible space-saving when you incorporate any unit into the layout of your recreational vehicle. With decades of experience and thousands of units sold, Atwood is positioned to remain number one in the design and manufacture of compact water heating units and specialty water heaters serving both the RV and marine markets.

The Basics Of Solar Panel Construction

By: Christopher Lollini

Solar power systems can provide a great alternative energy solution for your home and can generate most or even all of the power your home requires each day. These modern solar power systems are more efficient than ever before and require even less equipment to generate the power you need for your home. Most of the improvements with these home solar power systems are in the solar panels used to generate their power. These modern solar panels are able to generate far more solar power for homes from a given amount of sunlight than older panels and are more durable as well.

The Biggest Cost

Because these solar panels represent the largest part of the cost of these home solar power solutions, many homeowners try to build the solar panels used in their systems themselves to save money. Though cheaper, it is much safer to have a certified professional install your solar panels unless you have a working knowledge of electricity. If you do, all of the parts needed for a home solar power system installation project are easy to find online.

The Solar Cell Arrangement

The main component in any solar panel construction is the solar cell that does the actual conversion of sunlight to electricity within the panel. These solar cells are available in several different types and they each have different efficiencies and costs associated with your choice between them. The most efficient type of solar cell is called a mono-crystalline cell and is made from a single large silicon crystal. It can supply more current from a given amount of sunlight and is the most difficult to produce. The other common type of solar cell is a polycrystalline variety and this type of solar cell is made from smaller individual solar cells that are joined together to form a single larger cell. These are less expensive than the mono-crystalline cells and less efficient as well. If you can afford the mono-crystalline cells, these will be a better value for you over time as they can produce more current when they are installed in your solar panel construction project.

Putting It All Together

Once you have chosen the type of solar cell to use, the next step in solar panel manufacturing is to mount a collection of these solar cells onto a strong backing material. Because the solar cells are fragile, this backing material is used to support them and allow them to be wired together in your system. Most of the solar cells you purchase come with wiring guides to help you connect them together into a functioning solar panel. You will have a few different choices on the wiring depending on what voltage you are expecting to produce. When the solar cells are wired in series you will create a higher voltage and when they are wired in parallel your current will be higher. Usually most solar panel construction projects use a combination of series and parallel connections to provide the right balance between voltage and current for your completed solar panel.

Finishing It Up

Once the mounting and connection of the solar cells is finished, the backing board is installed in a weatherproof enclosure. This enclosure will protect the fragile cells from the elements and allow the sunlight to penetrate the top of the cabinet to allow them to work. This is basically how your solar panel is constructed.

Bathroom Fixer-Uppers

By: Keith Smallwood

When considering doing improvements or renovations to your homes, there are certain updates that will bring you considerably more value than others. One room that will bring you a good return on your investment is the bathroom. This is one room that house hunters scrutinize closely. If the house has a fabulous bathroom, they are much more willing to let some other things slide. If the house has an outdated bathroom however, consider them out the door. Here are some great ideas for modernizing your bathroom on any budget.

The first step to any bathroom renovation is planning. A good plan will ensure that you don’t have any unnecessary headaches and don’t spend more than you intend or need. When laying out a plan for your bathroom remodel, consider a couple of things: Will you be installing completely new fixtures? How about new flooring or lighting? Do you want to change the layout of your bathroom? The answers to all of these questions will help you get out a detailed plan with a realistic picture of what you need to buy and how much labor will be required. Also, when designing your new bathroom, decide on a budget right away and stick to it. It’s even a good idea to have a realtor help you figure out what other people in your neighborhood have spent on their bathroom updates to make sure you keep pace with the market.

Once you have gotten your plan down on paper, it’s time to get to work! If you are looking for an inexpensive way to give your bathroom a facelift it can be quite easy. Simply painting the walls, hanging artwork and buying new coordinating towels and accessories can have a huge impact for little money. If you are aiming for something a bit more involved, you have a ton of options to choose from. The first thing to decide on is your theme or style like contemporary, rustic or traditional. The style you choose will impact all of the new fixtures and accessories for your bathroom. The first place you want to start is with your major fixtures like the tub, toilet and sink. When choosing new fixtures, remember to measure, measure, measure! Many standards have changed, especially if you have an older home so measure at least twice before pulling out your wallet.

The next decision in your remodeling process is some of the aesthetic materials. For the walls, do you want to paint them one color, put up a rail and do bead board or do you want to tile them? If you choose paint, make sure you buy paint specific to bathrooms and kitchens. This paint has an anti-mildew agent in it which can prevent fungus from growing in your new room. This type of paint is also very easy to wipe clean and won’t bubble or peel from the humidity. Next, decide what type of material you want to use on your floor. Tile is probably the most popular option but you can also go with hardwood or even marble. Decide how much maintenance you are willing to do before choosing a material.

Another thing to consider in your bathroom renovation is who will be using the bathroom and how many people on a daily basis will enter. If you have a lot of children or are redoing the bathroom on your main level, you might want to choose more maintenance free materials and have lots of storage. If you are remodeling the master bathroom, you might be able to afford to go with some more luxurious elements to give you a true spa retreat. Just remember that no matter what type of fixtures and materials that you choose, they all need to be easy to clean. As long as you have a good plan before diving in to your renovation, you will have a successful project that will last for years to come!

If You’re Investing Money on Your Patio, Invest Your Time Too!

By: Jack Labens

Sometimes choosing patio furniture can be a very daunting and tedious task, but if you break it down into simple steps and guidelines, it's no problem at all! First, you want your furniture to be comfortable for your use. Sit in the chairs and at the table like you normally would, and see how you like the feel. Try out a couple of different styles and see what feels best to you. Stores put patio furniture on displays for a reason, so take advantage of it! Bounce ideas off of the displays for patterns and placement of furniture as well. If you're going to invest the money, you want to make sure you're comfortable!

Secondly, sometimes bringing pictures to the store with you can also be a helpful tool in deciding which patio furniture to purchase. By comparing the colors and designs of the furniture to what you have in the yard or patio already, gives you a better idea of what would look best in your environment! Being able to have the visuals in front of you, it saves time because you don’t have to worry about second guessing whether or not your new furniture will clash with décor you already have. Most importantly, you save money as well because if you purchase the correct furniture the first time around, there is no need to deal with the mess of returning it later on.

Thirdly, here are a few general rules of thumb for choosing an actual type of furniture for your patio. Wooden outdoor patio furniture is most used for country style patio designs. If you have an older, more classic looking patio set-up, then furniture with a wooden frame might be the way to go. On the contrary, if you have a more modern, Gothic or Victorian style Patio, then metal outdoor patio frames would probably be the best bet.

Protecting your patio furniture is important for a few reasons. First, various weather elements each have their own effect on the wear and tear of your furniture. In the summertime, when the majority of patio furniture is used, it tends to sit out all day in the hot sun. This can cause fading on both paint used on the fixtures, and the fabric and coloring in the cushions. By covering your patio furniture with protective covers, the coloring will remain intact for a lot longer.

Another weather scare is the rain. With enough rain coming in contact with your new furniture, mold and mildew can form causing it to rot and wear down. No one wants to use molding décor, and if it is used under these conditions, it can potentially be dangerous to your health. Covering your patio furniture when not in use greatly helps to protect against this, especially during those unexpected summer storms!

Make sure you take the time to get the best patio furniture covers to protect your new purchases. I find that EmpirePatioCovers.com offers quality covers no matter what protection you need. They also keep your furniture looking great even when it's covered by offering a slew of stylish patterns. There are all different varieties of protection for your patio, just like there are all different varieties of furniture, so be sure to invest your time wisely on both ends!

This may be very obvious but in most cases, there is that thing in us to hold on to an item believing that the item could be of future use. Usually, there is none. This is one of the very reasons that clutter in the home is piling up.

2. To free your home from clutter, buy only with a purpose in mind. It is so tempting to buy very nice things that are on sale. The truth though is that there are always and there will always be very nice things on sale. So to free your home from clutter, the idea is to ask the self if the item that is so attractive is necessary and better still, if it will really compliment the items that are already in the house. Often, an interior design is spoiled by buying beautiful items that are nice to see in the store but does not really harmonize well with the other items inside the house. Overtime knick-knacks like these spoils and add up to clutter. The sad thing is that beautiful items are not only more expensive, they are harder to discard.

3. To free your home from clutter, refrain from buying things that are seldom used. Good examples of these are lawn equipments. Lawn equipments are not actually cheap so when buying, consider the cost against the benefit that you could get from the item. Consider renting. True, it is good to own things but space also has its cost and space is expensive.

4. A clean house is a good deterrent at adding clutter. It is much harder to clutter a house that is clean. If cluttering a clean house pangs the conscience, cluttering up an already cluttered house does not.

5. Use memory aides very well. Cabinets, cubbyholes, and other storage spaces are good places to organize things and free your home from clutter. These are also excellent spaces to keep things that you do not want misplaced.

6. It is nice to keep mementoes and things that are of sentimental value but they also occupy space and clutter up storage places. Bills, receipts paperwork that have not seen the light of day for years already are better thrown away to give space for things that are more valuable, requires storage while it and free your home from clutter.

There is only so much space that the house could hold, always the space comes with a price tag. If the clutter does not merit the space, free your home from clutter. Good home management, requires us to get rid of these things no matter how we feel about it.

Home Management – Keeping Your Home Safe and Healthy

By: Low Jeremy

Good home management simply put is enhancing your house first to make it attractive followed next by keeping it safe and healthy to protect it from natural and biological threats.

1. Make your home safe; eliminate clutter. Good home management is freeing the house of clutter that not only spoils the interior of the house it is also a potential for accidents. Whether you are expecting a potential buyer or a visitor a house free from clutter is a relaxing sight. True the house may be clean but unless clutters are not stacked away, the home still looks disorganized and could cause irritation that affect the well-being of the occupants. Often too disorganization starts from here and creeps up until home management becomes less of a desirable task. Besides ridding the house of eyesores improve its value to the beholder.

2. Clean up. No house is more pleasant, no home management is that effective if the house is not truly clean. A house that has been subjected to cleaning overtime not only polishes the house and make it sparkle, rust and rots are easily discovered and remedied, insects and rodents are less prone to multiply and clog and worn out areas are immediately identified and repaired before it builds up where home management will already mean more than expected expense. Older houses have been preserved in this manner and fared better in the market place when the decision to sell the house comes.

3. Carpets could occupy large spaces and are on the top of list of the highly visible items in the house. Carpets are very good dust gatherers aside from attracting unwanted microbes, mold, and bacteria. Another danger here is that toddlers usually play, roll and could sleep in the parts of the house where there is carpeting. A shabby carpet, aside from inviting possible illnesses could make the house look old and worn. Carpets and rugs however could define the house and its spaces very well. Good home management should always have carpets on the top of its list. So if carpets and rugs are essential to your interiors have it cleaned periodically by professionals. For most carpet cleaning though, the do it yourself method is fine.

4. Effective home management involves cleaning up the air passages to the house. This is particularly true to houses that use screens on their doors, windows and other openings. Unclogging screens from dirt and grit freshens up the air and improve its circulation around the house.

5. Repaint. Painting not only beautifies the space it also makes it a little healthier. Paints aside from prettifying a space also repel insects and bugs. Repainting also often reveal spaces that are possible breeding ground for roaches and ants.

6. Get an electrician to check your wiring periodically. This is more important if you find traces that rats could be around.

Every homeowner wants to manage their house the best they can. In reality, houses today are more complex. Not minding a little grit, dust, and grease on your hands is fine but micromanaging a home could also result in unrealistic list of things to do that often results to having to be put off for later. Hiring professionals from time to time not only helps with better home management, it could cost you less.

Use of Bi Folding Doors For Conservatories

By: John Schofield

Sliding folding doors are now one of the obsessions among homeowners who are looking for appropriate permanent fixtures for their conservatories. Although conservatories are traditionally built with sliding patio doors or French doors, the introduction of the innovative generation of folding doors has paved the way for the construction of modernised conservatories. This means that with the improvement in designs and styles of today’s conservatories, the introduction of a new breed of folding doors has boosted the looks of the exterior and interior features of the sunrooms.

Bifold doors obviously are one of the types of folding doors that are always accorded with conservatories. This is because their two individual panels can easily slide and stacked up on one corner that makes them easy to handle while people are entering and exiting the doors of their conservatories. They can provide almost 90% unobstructed clearances so they are very ideal during summer while they can provide good insulation during winter. Their panels are also available in many sizes so there would be no problem in installing them on any width opening.

Specifications on Installation
When installing bifold doors for conservatories, their foundations must be solid and the roof eaves beam of the conservatory must be built with heavy-duty metals. This is to ensure that proper structural support is given to the overall weight of the folding doors especially now that most conservatories are made up of glazed glass walls. In positioning the bi-folding door, it must be placed on the front or sidewalls of the building so that there would be wide unobstructed access to the interior of the conservatory while letting the air to circulate inside it.

Options on Using Bifold Doors
Bi-folding doors are favourably preferred by homeowners more than any other type of folding doors because they are easy to manipulate that even children can open and close them. However, it is up to the owner where to position them on their conservatories as long as they can provide the best opportunity in merging the interior of the house and the conservatory with ease. On the other hand, it would be more appropriate if the front side will be the part for bifold door installation because this would allow a continuation of the house’ living areas that goes through the conservatory.

Types of Materials

Bi-folding doors are available with many choices of different materials and finishes so that they can suit everyone’s specific requirement and budget. Hare are the most popular ones.

1. Timber bifold doors. These are available in hardwood and softwood timber and they have the translucent stain or paint finish. Timber can be a good natural insulator as it also offers efficiency in the use of energy.

2. Aluminium bifold doors. These are thermally broken aluminium folding doors that have the quality of strength and durability. They are almost maintenance free and available in different paint finishes so you have the option in choosing the best colour for your conservatory.

3. uPVC. This is relatively one of the latest among bifold doors being used on conservatories today. They can offer more savings in terms of being energy efficient. Although they can minimize internal and external visibility, some people still prefer them because they can provide good security to the interior of the conservatory. They also do not warp or bend like wood and never get heated like the aluminium type bifold door.

Things to Look For Before Hiring a Plumber

By: Christine Dunbar

Opening your home up to a plumbing contractor should be done with caution. read on to learn some of the most important things to look for when hiring a plumber.

How to Hire a Plumber

Hiring a plumbing contractor for a plumbing issue in your home, whether it be a simple leak or a complete kitchen sink overhaul, can be a little unnerving. After all, this is your home that you are trusting this contractor with and actually paying him a considerable amount of money with the expectation to do the job quickly, efficiently and with great diligence and care. Who ever you decide to hire will be working on your home, which is not just a personal investment but an essential part of your life. Following some of these suggestions can help ensure that the plumbing contractor will work just as hard as you did for your home.

Don't Be Afraid to Do Your Research

The worst thing that you could do is not ask any questions. Hiring a plumber without inquiring about the contractor's history and work ethic could jeopardize the quality of the job. The whole point is to make sure that you hire someone that you are absolutely comfortable with. If you don't feel comfortable asking plumbers a few questions then a good way to find out more is to talk to your neighbors. This is beneficial because your neighborhood most likely have similar plumbing (depending on the area) and those who live next to you may have used a plumber that they could refer to you. In some cases a neighbor may have used the same plumber for years and completely trusts their work.
Licensing And BBB

Contact your state, city or county about contractor licensing (who you contact will depend on your state). To find out who to contact you may simply do a quick search online or contact your local city government and they will be able to point you in the right direction. This step is especially important because if you hire a plumber without proper licensing the contractor will not be liable for any mistakes that were made on the job. A license guarantees that the plumber is capable of doing the work. Also, contact the local Better Business Bureau office and see if the contractor you wish to hire is registered with them. If they are it is a definitely indication that the contractor sincerely cares for the quality of work that he or she does.

Get All The Details
So you think you've got the right plumber and you are ready to move on to the next step and hire them. However, the last thing you would want is to hire a plumber and then be blindsided by handing you the bill. Upon further examination of the invoice you notice that you were not only charged for the hourly labor, but for parts and other unexpected expenses. Before you confirm that the contractor is hired ask them to give you a written breakdown of all expenses that will be needed to complete the job. That way, if the plumber finishes the job and indicates that it will be more than the contractor initially quoted you will have written documentation of what was agreed upon.

Using Free Woodworking Plans

By: Tim Sousa

Any woodworking project should start with a good plan. A good woodworking plan will lay out for you all of the measurments, the materials, and in some cases the tools needed for a successful project. You don't need to spend a lot of money on plans, though. If you go to your local home improvement store, they may have free plans available to you. An even easier way to find free woodworking plans is to look on the internet. Thousands of free plans are available for download. Before you download any plans, though, there are some things that you should check, to make sure your project will go smoothly and easily.

Check the measurements of the plan. Are things measured in inches, or centimeters, feet, or meters. Make sure the measurements of your woodworking plan meet your needs. You certainly don't want to build a three foot long table, when you only have two feet of space. If you plan on making your project larger or smaller, you should also check and make sure that the measurements are easily scaled up or down if necessary.

Look through the list of materials required for the project. You may or may not be able to find all of the materials in your area, or the materials may be expensive. Check the materials and see if you can find substitutes if necessary. Do a little bit of research, and find out if the materials listed are truly suited for the design, and if they meet your needs. You don't want to build a shelf to put in a humid area, such as the bathroom, and find out that the wood is susceptible to mold growth, or warping in damp conditions.

Take a look at the complexity of the plan. Even a simple looking plan requires a certain level of skill. Honestly assess your skill level in woodworking, and decide whether or not you can handle it. Look to see if there are ways to scale down the complexity of a woodworking plan to make it more simple. Maybe there are some unecessary features that you could eliminate that would simplify the plan for you. If you find a plan that requires advanced skill levels that you do not yet have, perhaps you can find a skilled craftsman in your area to help you modify and simplify the plan.

Check the copyright of the plan. If you're just planning on building a piece of furniture or decoration for your own home, then copyright isn't much of an issue. But if you plan on selling your work, you should check the copyright of the plan, and determine whether or not you are allowed to sell any works created from the plan. Keep in mind that the plan is someone else's design, and they may not be giving you permission to use it for anything other than personal use. If you sell projects created from a plan that is not yours, you could be sued for making profits from another person's work.

The internet is a great tool, allowing you to easily find woodworking plans and other woodworking resources. Before downloading a plan, though, just do some research, and make sure that the plan is right for you.

Emergency and Safety Drench Showers

By: Patricia Holland

Emergency & Safety Drench Showers are needed in workplaces where people have potential exposure to hazardous materials. Generally hazardous materials are those that can cause damage to the skin or eyes or can be readily absorbed through the skin. These materials can be liquids, solids, gases, and vapors and mists. The most common hazardous materials are usually in the form of liquids and they can be common chemicals, very acidic liquids, or highly alkaline liquids. Battery acid contains sulfuric acid and is an example of a very acidic liquid. Ammonia is an example of a highly alkaline liquid. Chlorine, hydrogen peroxide (bleach), and cyanoacrylate adhesives (Super Glue) are examples of common chemicals that are hazardous.

Emergency & Safety Drench Showers are required when any potential exists for employee / student exposure. If the hazardous material has the potential to be splashed on the skin or into the eyes then drench showers are required. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, and faceshields are frequently used in these workplaces but determinations of exposure should be made without regard to the use of these types of equipment.

There are a number of considerations for buyers of Emergency & Safety Drench Showers. In the past it was a simpler product and decision. However, today a great deal of time and money is spent on facility planning. Today’s considerations include visibility of the location, water containment and disposal, equipment protection, and the privacy and protection of the users. Circular shower curtains were used in the past in part because the equipment and requirements were simpler. Today emergency equipment enclosures have become more popular because of the options they offer in meeting facility and user needs.

Emergency & Safety Drench Showers that offer an enclosed area have a number of benefits for the user and facility owner. When the enclosed drench shower has a door or curtain the user has a certain degree of privacy and is more likely to shed his / her clothing and to remain in the shower for a full fifteen minute decontamination period. The enclosure also helps to contain and drain the contaminated water from the area. Another benefit is that the enclosure will provide protection to other equipment in the area.

Emergency & Safety Drench Showers should be tested on a weekly basis. The primary reason for frequent testing is to confirm that the equipment is working properly. The second reason is to flush out any sediment or debris that may be in the water supply line. Inspection tags should be attached to the equipment and used to document each test. Each test should last at least five minutes for both reasons mentioned earlier. In addition, all persons who have the potential to be exposed to hazardous materials should be trained on the proper use of the emergency equipment. The training should include the location of the drench showers, how they are operated, and under what conditions they should be used.

The location of drench showers is also very important. In general, these showers should be located on the same floor and within a 10 second walking time. For more dangerous materials, drench showers should be located immediately adjacent to the work site. Any installation of a drench shower should consider the path of travel and keep it straight and free of obstructions.

Installing a Home Security System

By: Edward Kendricks

If security is a concern for your work or home then you will want to do everything you can to protect your property. Even if you aren't that technically minded it is still relatively straightforward to install an outdoor motion detecter. All that is required is an existing light fixtures as well as a nearby source of electricity. It doesn't matter if you are having trouble locating a power source as you will still be able to run a cable out to the light. All it takes is a little bit of wiring knowledge.

The first job that you need to take care of is to locate for the circuit breaker/fuse that is connected to the exterior light that you wish to use. Running a new electrical circuit is much more complex and will require specialist knowedge, however for the purposes of this article we will be dealing with the basics if you have an existing light source. Once the fuse or circuit breaker has been turned off it is important that you use a suitable voltage tester to ensure that the power is definitely off. Once you have confirmed this get the new fixture out of it's packaging and read the instructions on how to set it up. Take care to notice any additional parts and screws so that you can have the relevant bits needed when required.

The next task to take care of is to remove the existing outdoor fixure so that you can prepare it for the new motion sensing device. It would be advisable to use a cordless drill to do this if you have one as it will make the task that much quicker, however you may find the task earlier if you first unscrew the existing screws a little with a phillips screwdriver. This will be useful if the screws are flat or a little rusty as your cordless drill will have trouble dripping them.

Once the old fixture has been removed take the base of your new motion sensing light and accurately mark out the areas where the screws are to be positioned. Before you try to fit the new sensor remember to fish the source wires through the middle of the base so that they are easily accessible. Now that your base is ready the next task is to match the source wires to the new wires on the new fixture. If the new wires look too long or too short to match the existing wires then use a pair of wire cutters to strip off some of the insulation. Approximately 3/4 of an inch should be sufficient.

Once everything is in place and fits firmly all that is left to do is to put the light into the fixture base. Remember to make sure the rubber seal is kept on. Simply turn the power back on and move across the sensor to see if it works! If you are at all unsure about installing any of your equipment then it could be time well spent to do a search online to find companies who specialise in security equipment.

One thing you can make sure when you make your own food is that you have control over the ingredients that go in your food. Try to cut down on fats, especially oil. Use heart healthy cholesterol lowering oils. Avoid sugar; use natural honey instead. Sucralose (brands: Splenda, SugarFree Natura) is probably the least dangerous alternative to sugar out there, next to honey, of course. Sucralose is safe for baking, but avoid it in excess for long term effects are not known. Short term include gastrointestinal problems. If you know you haven’t gotten your daily nutrients right, supplement your diet with necessary vitamin, mineral, and protein supplements, taking care not to overdose yourself as that might prove risky in the long run.

2. You Get Control Over the Nutrition

Include as many fruits and vegetables to your daily diet as possible. The healthier the food, the more nutrients you get. Make sure you’re getting the right balance of carbs, good fats, protein, and fiber in your diet. Portion-controlled diets work well when you often get hungry and are used to eating every three hours or so.

3. You Burn Energy While You Cook

What if I tell you that cooking your favorite fruit pie or pudding will actually help you burn some fat so that you can enjoy your healthy dessert later on without guilt? Remember, portions matter though. And to answer the earlier question, yes, cooking helps you burn calories.

Now that you know cooking is good for you, both in terms of getting what you want in your diet and in terms of helping you lose weight by eating right and burning energy, when do you take the next move and flaunt your newly acquired healthy cooking skills? Try out new recipes, make some of your own, develop a new taste for guilt-free cooking (and eating), and you’ll soon realize what you have been missing on before. Why buy all those weight-loss products and let your money go waste when you have healthier choices available right at home? Before you know it, you would start feeling good about yourself, about your body, and about eating in general. Take that trip to the grocery store now, or invest your energy in a little vegetable garden of your own; don’t forget to be organic and holistic! Healthy times are only beginning, and there’s no better way to eat food than to cook it yourself!

Energy Saving Lamps

By: Richard.E Davies

Energy saving lamps can reduce your carbon footprint and save you money.

According to a report in britain.tv, replacing just one 100w lamp with a low–energy 100w lamp can save you the same amount of electricity it would take to boil the water for 1,200 cups of tea. And it will help the environment too.

By the end of 2011, the Government, working with retailers and backed up by European legislation, will have phased out the sale of inefficient lamps. But you can do your bit now.

Electricity saving products that really are energy saving if fitted correctly, see electrical fittings. When electricity is generated, mercury is emitted from power stations. Therefore, if you use energy efficient lamp it reduces the amount of electricity generated, thereby reducing mercury emissions — which in turn helps you to better help the environment.

On a financial level, by improving your lighting you can reduce your electricity bill by using fluorescent tubes and energy efficient compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). These small fluorescent lamps fit into standard light sockets and use mercury to generate light more efficiently. The mercury creates an ultraviolet light, and a special coating in the lamp then changes it into the light we see, but it only uses a minimal amount of mercury, around 4 milligrams per lamp. They also use energy to produce more light than heat, as opposed to standard lamps, where an electric current passes through a thin metal wire, wasting huge amounts of energy in heat.

Whilst they are slightly more expensive than standard lamps they will more than compensate for the initial outlay as they can last up to ten times longer. Nowadays they offer a comparable brightness and colour rendering, and are available in a range of colours.

CFLs are best used in areas where they are left on for a few hours at a time, as frequent switching on and off reduces their life.

Most energy efficient lamps are not compatible with dimmer switches, however manufacturers are working towards making them widely available. An alternative would be the use of a dimmer switch, which is a another convenient way to substantially increase energy savings and lamp life.

According to DEFRA…
…changing from a standard household lamp to a Low–energy CFL–1 lamp can save you £9 per year or £100 over its 1114 hour average life time.

The aim of phasing out traditional lamps is “to save up to 5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by 2012 from UK electricity generation — the equivalent to the carbon emissions of a typical 1 Gigawatt coal fired power station”.

See how easy it is to reduce your carbon footprint and make electricity savings? this is a common question asked on a regular occurrence.

All you have to do is replace your lamps — and if you look out for the Energy Saving Trust’s ‘Energy Saving Recommended’ logo on them, you can be sure they will give out the same warm light level as your old standard ones too.

Renewable Solar Energy

By: Richard.E Davies

It is thought that by the middle of this century the sun could provide 10% of the UK’s energy needs. Over the course of a year the sun beams down between 900 and 1,200kWh per square metre — hard to believe on a wet and windy winter’s day — and can be utilised to either generate electricity via PV panels (photovoltaics) or hot water with solar thermal panels.

PV Panels
PV panels generate energy from the sun. Without getting too technical, photons of light transfer their energy to electrons in a silicon crystal and generate a direct current with an equivalent voltage of 12V. This is then put through an inverter to make it suitable for 240V circuits.

The panels are ideal for buildings that use a lot of electricity in the daytime, such as offices, but should never be viewed in isolation, because the electricity they generate requires expensive batteries to store.

The average PV panel has an output potential of 1.5 to 2kWp. This is enough to provide about a fifth of an average home’s annual electricity requirements. However, energy production does vary seasonally and has an impact on costs of electrical fittings. At the height of the summer, full output may be capable of supplying all of a building’s needs.

Three types of system are available:
Monocrystalline panels are the most effective harvesting about 15% of the full energy potential — the rest is lost in the conversion process; Polycrystalline panels are less efficient, harvesting 13% of the potential energy; and Thin–film amorphous silicon panels just 7% – only really viable on buildings with a huge expanse of roof.

Providing the panel is set at the same pitch as the roof and does not stand too proud of the roof profile, planning permission should be granted. It is, however, worth checking a local authority’s past record on these issues.

Once installed, short of an occasional wipe clean, there are no running or maintenance costs and panels should last for upwards of 30 years.

Until now the uptake of PV panels has been low. This is largely because the payback period can be very long term — anything from 60 to 120 years — as the UK energy industry pays such a low rate for any energy sold back to the grid.

Elsewhere in Europe, some countries require that electricity is bought back at three times the rate that is paid for it, so significantly reducing payback times and increasing adoption of the panels.

Solar Thermal Panels
In Europe, the solar heating market grew by 18% in 2005. By 2010 in the UK there are expected to be 25,000 new domestic solar water heating installations, rising to 75,000 by 2020.

Solar water heating systems gather energy radiated by the sun and convert it into useful heat in the form of hot water. As hot water requirements are minimal in offices, its main use is in domestic developments where it can provide almost all of a property’s hot water during the summer months and about 50% throughout the year, according to the Energy Saving Trust. It can also reduce CO² emissions by between 0.4 to 0.75 tonnes per year, depending on the fuel replaced.
There are two types of system available Flat plates are the cheaper, less efficient option. These glazed usually rectangular shaped panels, work best on hot days and use a metal absorber plate, which is in contact with water pipes.
Evacuated tubes are more efficient and hence, more expensive. Their energy is derived from light, which enters a ‘vacuum flask’ type of glass tube and is converted into heat in the water through contact with an absorber such as black paint.

Both systems pump the heated water (mixed with antifreeze) through heat exchangers that are connected to hot water tanks.

Panels range in size from 0.7m² to 8m² — evacuated tubes normally take up less space. Most manufacturers will normally suggest one panel will provide a home with two–thirds of its annual hot water needs.
Flat plate panels should be expected to last between 10 to 25 years and evacuated tubes for 20 to 35 years. Pay back is normally about 10 years.

How to Plan Your Christmas Decorations Around Your Lifestyle

By: Jennifer Landers

A fun and convenient way to make home and holiday all come together when you decorate is to make your home a holiday reflection of who you are. Plan your decorating around your lifestyle so you do not have to feel like you are going out of the way to do something laborious for the holiday. Keep it simple and make plans that are easy to execute and will work within the way you do things. You can take an idea and showcase your talent or tell a great story about the holiday when your home decorating reflects your lifestyle.

Take a section of a room at a time and evaluate what you want to do with it. Open spaces are the areas in the room where you can fill in with your decorations without making the room feel and look cluttered. Remove things that you do not want to include in your decorations until after the holiday and store them in a closet or another room. This will free up more space for you to work with.

Lighting is very important. Use the available light you already have to highlight the decorations. Take advantage of the natural light and available light from the fixtures in each room. You can change the entire mood of a room with a simple light bulb color change or when you add an inexpensive color filter. A film of colored cellophane available from a local craft store set on a simple frame can do the trick. They are easy to use and can add texture to room and make the whole thing pop with excitement and Yule tide warmth. If your lifestyle is easy going and laid back, then your holiday home should be an extension of that as well. Now move through the entire home the same way.

When you take a slow deliberate look at what you already have in the house, it is easier to avoid that cluttered look and a feeling that the colors do not match. Remember the furniture and the paint on the walls are already the main reflection of you so let them work for you. Let the colors do the work for you.

For instance If you decide to use a winter sports and combine it with angels as a basic decorating theme, you now you have your baseline theme and you have your visuals. Take a look around the home but use your critical eye to see things. What focal points do you already have at home? Is it special colors, pieces or art, music? You probably already have everything you need to finish the job. You might only need to add holiday trim with lighting, such as soft background decorations. Do something that will make your home fun to look at throughout the entire season. Make it easy to maintain without much effort. When you make a holiday statement that is an extension of who you are, it looks great and you enjoy the results. Remember keep it simple and enjoy the whole process. Your lifestyle already dictates who you are and what you do. If you are a high energy, always on the go and make decisions on the fly kind of person, delegate almost everything and get feedback from those you delegate to. If your lifestyle is more of what I like to call the contemplate, meditate and negotiate method, you might need lots of time. Your lifestyle does not have to change just so you can have a great looking home for the holiday.

Set aside short blocks of time during the week to delegate and coordinate is the best solution. Set an appointment with yourself to look into what needs to be done and who is going to do it.

Floral decorations can be planned by making arrangements far enough in advance so all you need to do is be home for the delivery or pick up what you need on the way home one day. Locating trimmings for the home can also be done on line. If you take 10 minutes to set up your plan you have almost everything done already.

Bookmark a couple of sites that are dedicated to holiday decorating and there you have it. Use them to be your electronic elves. Most local businesses have online links and can take care of most of the things that you cannot take the time to do. You still might have to make a few calls but when you already have specific information about what you want you will get better customer service.

Most of all make realistic plans to spend quality time getting things done. Don’t panic. Relax and keep the holiday spirit in the front of your mind. Set up a holiday email book with the list of folks who will do the work with you. This list might include family and friends and retailers where you shop.. Now just sit back and delegate. Some of the tools at your disposal include links and websites that already have the visuals you want to accomplish.

Set a realistic time table to get things done. You should remember that if you start planning in early December you will only have about a week or two to get things done. If you start to keep track of things by the end of October you will have ample time to prioritize what need to get done and decide on how long it might take to do it.

Think of it in terms of a festive event. Kind of like a house warming, instead it is a holiday decorating. Invite some friends over, hand out holiday favors for those who come to help. Something simple, or even treat everybody to a nice lunch or a, special dessert will do. One way to approach the holiday is to remember that you can have a great theme home without all the hassle of trying to make your home look like a big production. The holiday windows theme can be accomplished in one hour. The poinsettias can be set out in just a few minutes and the memories of the joy and fun you had because your holiday decorating was a reflection of your lifestyle can last a lifetime.
